First month at half price on Optus My Prepaid Daily

As any of our subscribers and regular readers would know, we are huge fans of prepaid mobile plans.

Time & time again, we have proven to ourselves and others that prepaid plans always offer better value than any of the contract mobile plans.

Even though prepaid plans are the best value mobile plans, there hasn’t been much innovation happening in this space. All the prepaid plans fell so far into the following three main groups:

  1. ‘Cap’ plans - you pay a fixed amount per month and get an included amount of value which you can use towards calls and texts (at pretty ordinary rates usually) as well as a certain amount of included data.
  2. ‘Unlimited’ plans - you pay a fixed amount per month and get unlimited calls and texts as well as a certain amount of included data.
  3. ‘Pay as you go’ plans - you buy a certain amount of credit and use it for calls, texts and data on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis. With these plans, you don’t have to pay a fixed amount monthly and the included credit you bought is valid for anything between 3 and 12 months. Any remaining unused credit at the end of that period is considered forfeited and is lost.

Recently, however, Optus have decided to ‘rattle the cage’ a little bit and introduce a product which is aimed specifically at those people who have ‘erratic’ usage patterns of their phones. This product is called the Optus My Prepaid Daily plan.

Users with ‘erratic’ usage patterns refer to people who might not use their phones for several days to make a call, send an SMS or use data but then have days where they ‘binge’ and need to make lots of calls, send lots of SMS or use a lot of data (or any combination of those).

This could be for example people who use their phones a lot during the working week and not much over the weekend or vice versa.

Prepaid plans who cater specifically for such people are pretty common in the USA and Europe but were not really available in Australia until the introduction of the Optus My Prepaid Daily plan.

Here is how it works:

  • You put credit on your Optus prepaid account. This can be anything between $10 and $100.
  • The credit lasts for 6 months from recharge but you can extend the expiry of the entire balance by another 6 months if you put more credit before the initial expiry date.
  • On days that you don’t use your phone at all or only receive calls & texts, you pay nothing!
  • Any day (which is defined as 00:00 to 23:59 in your local time zone) during which you make a call, send a text or use data you are charged $1. As soon as you are charged, you are automatically credited with unlimited SMS and MMS, 30 minutes of calls to any mobile or landline in Australia as well as your voicemail box and 40MB of included data (4G speeds where available and 3G elsewhere).
  • If you exceed your allocated data or call minutes for that day, you are automatically charged an extra 50 cents and ‘bumped’ to a higher limit of unlimited call minutes and 80MB of included data.
  • If your data usage for that day exceeds 80MB, Optus will continue charging you 50 cents for every additional 50MB (or part thereof) you use that day, up to a maximum charge for the day of $5 which equates to a data allowance of 430MB for the day.

The Optus My Prepaid Daily plan might sound a bit complicated and confusing to understand at first but we hope you have a better understanding of it now. As we said, these kind of prepaid plans are very common overseas and especially in North America.

Also, given it is prepaid, you can just give it a try and see whether or not it works for you. If you’re not happy, you simply port out your number and walk away. No commitments and no hassles (which is just the way we like it ).

If this sounds good to you and you want to give it a try, we have a little ‘sweetener’ for you.

Starting today (10/09/2026) and until close of business on Wednesday (16/09/2026) both Kmart and Coles are running a promotion whereby you can get an Optus prepaid SIM with $30 of included credit for $14.95.

This is a perfect opportunity to try out the new Optus My Prepaid Daily plan to see if it suits you or not.

Buy 2 of those starter packs at Coles (one for you and one for a friend, partner or other family member) and you also get yourself a fuel discount voucher.

If you think however, that the Optus My Prepaid Daily plan will not work for you (as it doesn’t align with your usage patterns) and would like to explore other options, we recommend you check out our comprehensive (yet totally free) report on what our research suggests are the best mobile plans currently available in Australia.
